New data for Ghana, Ireland, and Uganda and New Tabulation Geography Functionality
December 12, 2024
We have released data tables and GIS boundary files for the Ireland 1991 Population and Housing Census, the Population and Housing Census of Ghana 2010, and the Agricultural Census of Uganda 2009. The Ireland dataset represents the first time these data are publicly available in a digitized format. These data include much greater detail than data tabulated from the Ireland 1991 IPUMS International microdata sample. The microdata sample has just six geographic units (regions), while the published census tables include data down to rural districts/urban districts/municipal boroughs (212 units) and towns/environs (254 units). GIS boundary files are avialble down to rural districts/urban districts/municipal boroughs. See the dataset descriptions and geography & GIS pages for more information, and use the data finder to browse and request data.
We have also added functionality related to tabulation geographies to the data access system. You can now view metadata about tabulation geographies, including descriptive statistics about the populations and areas of units in each geography and partial lists of unit names. A new tabulation geographies filter allows you to limit the listing of tables to those that are available for tabulation geographies at selected levels or ranges of mean population or area. Finally, you can select which tabulation geographies to include in your extract.
This release also incorporates some changes to the codes used to identify tables in the Niger 2001 Census of Population and Housing. Because these changes may cause inconsistencies with previous extract definitions, extracts including the NE2001pop dataset made prior to the release have been marked as "retired." You will not be able to revise retired extracts for resubmission. You may still download the previously created extract files.
New data for Ghana, Myanmar, Qatar, and Sri Lanka
June 20, 2024
We have released data tables and GIS boundary files for the Ghana 2021 Population and Housing Census, The Population and Housing Census of Myanmar 2014, the Qatar Population and Housing Census 2004, and the Sri Lanka Census of Population and Housing 2012. The Qatar dataset represents the first time these data are publicly available in a digitized format, and the Myanmar data include the first known publicly available shapefile at the city/township level. See the dataset descriptions and geography & GIS pages for more information, and use the data finder to browse and request data.
Addition of tabulations from IPUMS International microdata
February 21, 2023
IHGIS now includes data tabulated from IPUMS International microdata samples. We defined a standard set of thirty tabulations, covering demographics, employment, education, and household utilities and amenities. This set of tabulations was generated from each microdata sample, to the extent that the required variables were present in the microdata. These tabulations were originally created for IPUMS Terra and are preserved in IHGIS as part of the legacy of the Terra project. See the dataset descriptions page for additional information.
We have also added the ability to view datasets by world region or by decade in the datasets filter panel.
This release marks a new version of IHGIS. The current IHGIS is now version 2, and DOI is http://doi.org/10.18128/D120.V2. We have preserved an archival version of version 1.
New data for Belize, Gambia, and Togo
January 23, 2023
We have released data tables and GIS boundary files for the Belize 2010 Population and Housing Census, The Gambia 2013 Population and Housing Census (preliminary results), and Togo 2010 General Census of Population and Housing. Belize and Togo include data and boundaries to the third administrative level (Belize cities/villages/towns and Togo cantons/quartiers). See the dataset descriptions and geography & GIS pages for more information, and use the data finder to browse and request data.
Angola and Dominican Republic data added
July 21, 2022
We have released data tables and GIS boundary files for the Angola 2014 General Population and Housing Census and the Dominican Republic 2010 National Population and Housing Census (including data to the Municipal district level). See the dataset descriptions and geography & GIS pages for more information, and use the data finder to browse and request data.
Japan and Syria data added
May 16, 2022
We have released data tables and GIS boundary files the 2010 Population Census of Japan and the Syrian Arab Republic Population and Housing Census 2004. See the dataset descriptions and geography & GIS pages for more information, and use the data finder to browse and request data.
This release also incorporates some changes to the codes used to identify tables in other datasets, in preparation for providing additional tables for those datasets. Because these changes may cause inconsistencies with previous extract definitions, extracts made prior to the release have been marked as "retired." You will not be able to revise retired extracts for resubmission. You may still download the previously created extract files.

Welcome to IPUMS IHGIS!
September 28, 2020
We are pleased to introduce the initial version of the IPUMS International Historical Geographic Information System (IHGIS). IHGIS provides data tables from censuses of population, housing, and agriculture from around the world, along with corresponding GIS boundary files. This initial release of IPUMS IHGIS includes 270 tables from twelve countries, drawn from nine population censuses and four agricultural censuses.
The data in IHGIS were originally published by national statistical offices of the respective countries, primarily in PDF documents. Data tables in these documents vary greatly in structure and are not easy to import into statistical or other analysis software. IHGIS extracts the data from the tables and provides them to users in a standardized, machine-readable structure.
We have more than 10,000 additional data tables in the pipeline and plan to release new data on a regular basis. Register now to be the first to know when new data are available and be notified of opportunities to provide feedback on prioritizing datasets for future releases.
